Statement

Through the period of my two year art & design course I have acquired a range of relevant and appropriate skills for a course based around animation & illustration. I have studied subjects such as fine art, graphic design, illustration, photography, print making and 3d visualisation. Regular life drawing classes are also included with this, which has enabled me to understand the human form to a high standard.

Outside of college I enjoy creating and developing my own style of work. I design my own characters, backgrounds and environments. Along with my art work I also try to write a lot, short stories and children’s books mainly. Recently I have been writing and illustrating a book with my friend, it initially started as being aimed for children, but has since developed in to something more adult orientated.

This course is not something I have thought lightly about doing, I am highly motivated to succeed in the creative industry. I believe I have the ability to do so and believe that this course is the right stepping stone in the direction I wish to take. If I were to be accepted on to this course I would take a strong interest in the animation area, as this is something I have been passionate about for large part of my life. I have a strong artistic foundation to develop my skills in to animation, and would love the chance to do so.

In my portfolio I will show you examples of my independent illustrations such as ones in the book I have recently been creating. I will also show examples of perspective drawings and life drawings. Along with this I have also included examples of graphics work, printing, photography, still animation pieces, and evidence of moving image.

Please follow this link to see an example of moving image and animation I completed with a friend during the summer holidays. It is all original footage and music.

Animation examples

Here are two examples of still animation I have attempted. This is my very first attempt at trying to follow a line of motion, and show evidence of inbetweening. I personally think they’re quite crude, but I thought they would be relevant pieces to show.

Fashion photography

Here is a digital piece of photography I completed whilst in college. It is directly inspired by the fashion photographer Mario Testino.

Screaming man

Here is a screen print I completed of a screaming man, I wanted to use bright vivid colours against the painful emotion.

Life drawing

1 hour. Here is a fully finished life drawing I completed.

Life drawing

15 Minutes each. Here are three life drawings I completed of a female model. I was focussing mainly on form for these.

Restaurant perspective drawing

2 hours. This a 2-point perspective illustration of the cafĂ© situated in my college. I used small shaded figures to give the image a sense of scale. I used grey markers and a multi liner.

Perspective concept

3 hours. Here is a conceptual interior I completed for my constructed world project using 2-point perspective. I used grey markers and a fine liner to achieve the desired effect.

Large robot concept

3 hours. Here is an independent concept design I completed; I used grey marker pens and a multi liner.

World consumption

15 minutes. Here is another piece from my obsessive consumption project. I tried to outline the brainwashing amount of signs and logos that bombard us everyday of our lives, persuading us in to buying products we don’t particularly need.

Burger head

10 minutes.

This piece was part of an independent project I have recently created. It attacks obsessive consumerism. I used watercolours and multi liner. It is mounted on McDonald’s packaging.
